Hello everyone!  I just had a baby 6 weeks ago and during the last trimester i started to experience pain like carpal tunnel in my right wrist.  It went away until now 6 weeks postpartum I am in so much pain.  I was planning on starting on my own for massage since the spa i worked at was running too slow to take me back.  What am I suppose to do?  Is this the end of my massage career?  Help!

You need massage...Start working your own forearms and hands...Work on the sore areas.. Soft tissue release techniques work very well for carpal tunnel..   Stretch and massage..Pin and stretch.  Hot and cold water... Feel your muscles.  Massage fixes carpal tunnel..It cures it... You will gain actual experiential knowledge of massage that you will be able to translate into pain relief for your clients.   Its not the end of your career.  Its the beginning of really learning the art of massage. 

Do you work on a computer very much?  If you do, you might want to look into a vertical mouse, like the ones here:

They can really help!

Gordon has some awesome suggestions.  Also, look for muscle knots in your shoulders.  Releasing those will help the alignment of your whole arm.

Thank you for the congrats!  I have not worked on the computer much at all.  It is one of the wonderful symptoms of pregnancy unfortunately :)

Carpal  Tunnel Syndrome is very common during pregnancy in the third trimester and can continue on after the infant is born.  During pregnancy many women retain fluid and the resulting swelling can cause pressure on the nerve within the carpal tunnel.  If you are breastfeeding your little one, check your posture.  Oftentimes new moms place their wrists in a flexed position when supporting their infant which puts pressure on the median nerve.  Also, inflammation resulting from hormones, etc. can put pressure on the nerve.  More often than not the symptoms will resolve with time and it is definitely not the end of your career.  It is most likely related to your pregnancy.  If the symptoms wake you up at night I suggest wearing wrist splints - they can help decrease symptoms so you can get the much needed rest while your baby is sleeping (well, at least between feedings).  

 

Gordon has great suggestions, especially the hot and cold water (aka, contrast bath).  Get two basins - one for warm and one for cold water.  Submerge your hands (past the wrists) starting with warm water for 2 minutes, cold for one minute, alternate every minute for 10 minutes, ending in warm water.  If you can find time to get a massage, that can definitely help!
