massage and bodywork professionals
a community of practitioners
I attended a spa professionals networking event on Monday put on by The Spa Buzz, and the theme for the event was "Wellness." As the event icebreaker, all 45 of the event participants stood in a circle and we all shared one thing we do for our own wellness.
I wanted to promote what I do by saying "to be well I regularly get massages" but I realized that probably wasn't the best idea, since I know that I don't get a massage as frequently as I should.
So now I'm curious, how regularly do you receive massages or bodywork?
And what is one thing that you do to be well?
Permalink Reply by Therese Schwartz on August 9, 2012 at 4:58pm I get a massage every 2 weeks. I also get bodywork done during continuing education classes and I host events at my house. I put a lot of effort into that, but it's only a few times a year. It helps though!
I do yoga, Zumba and just started doing Pilates again after taking a couple of years off from it. It was more useful than I ever knew when I did it regularly!
I also just started learning to meditate. That's amazing!

I need it...Otherwise I spend a fair amount of time stretching every day and using self massage tools. I feel like I need a good Thai Massage.
Therese - sounds like you are very into self-care! thank you for sharing!
Gordon - I'm interested to know - what type of self massage tools do you use?
Thank you both!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAytHu1g12w The best tool Ive ever found for my back is the Ma-Roller.. I also have a small little wooden dowel like tool for working on my hands and fingers...I use Miracle Ball for my sides and hips. That and stretching keeps me going... The Ma-Roller is awesome, and I base my massage work from that tool.. Its hard to find a massage therapist that can work along the spine as good as that thing..It is freakin amazing. If you buy one.. Make sure you are buying the Original one...There are a lot of copy cats out there, with not quite the same demolitions(not as good).

Permalink Reply by Abram Herman on August 10, 2012 at 12:13pm I'm fortunate to be surrounded by MTs, so lately I've been getting a massage almost every other week! Of course, if I had my wish, I'd have my own full time MT following me around everywhere I go, 24/7... One can dream I guess!

Permalink Reply by Gael Wood on August 14, 2012 at 8:00pm Every two weeks! I finally have a regular trade and we don't "bump" each other for paying clients.
Jimswife - I'm so glad that you found a way to incorporate massage into your routine. I can't imagine not getting a massage in a year! Sounds like it will also be an educational opportunity. Enjoy!
Gael - The regular trade sounds like a great way to ensure you are always receiving bodywork if it is always in your schedule!
Abram - I also wish I had a personal full time MT to follow me around...maybe some day!
Thanks everyone for your responses!

Permalink Reply by Aaron J Witz on August 16, 2012 at 12:11am I am not sure if this counts, however I have a slew of self care techniques that I perform on myself daily. These range from stretches that I give as homework to my clients, to myofascial techniques that I use on my neck, wrists and knees.
I haven't gotten an actual massage by another practitioner in a while, but i find that incorporating some of these techniques that I use into a self care routine helps immensely.
