to use a friend's crisis to make money if I am also doing it to help raise money for them?

an acquaintence from the mountain bike club i belong to has a very sad story that has developed over the last few days. his 2.5 yo son was found in a full blown seizure last thursday and the cause was a malignant tumor pressing on his skull. they removed the tumor yesterday and now he will need to start chemo. this person has always been a real advocate for me when others were trying to mess with me. we have always had a bond through our love of photography but have never really been close enough to spend casual time together.

with his surmounting medical expenses rising daily, i couldn't help but think that i could use massage to give back to the biking community by donating $5 from every session towards helping them with their son's treatment.

i am also in a terrible scenario with my own child's medical issues. and so increasing massages would go a long way to help me. and i guess that's where i start to feel that i'm exploiting a person's bad situation just to help my own.

thoughts?

Gotta go with Ty on this one. Lisa, you have never come across as someone who would exploit someone else for your own gain. Those type of people tend to be a little more transparent...have met a few. You're talking about giving back. Commendable. You also have your own child's medical issues to deal with....and you are. Also commendable. Don't be so hard on yourself. Good karma and all that...........
Terry has the correct idea Lisa. Set up a tip Jar with info for the family so your clients can donate as well. Remember what goes around comes around. You give you will receive in due time. It just always works that way.
Remember Rudy's "Blessing Box" in this scenario. You can do a little Bio/Pic of the child and his situation to attach it to the box. Let your clients know that you are donating $5 per massage or all your tips to help with medical bills. They may be inspired to leave you bigger tips or drop some cash in on their own as well. Not at all exploitation.
I agree, Lisa. You have always been a giving person through my virtual lens, with a wonderful sense of serving others first. Do what your gut knows is right, there are great suggestions here. Don't be so hard on yourself! My prayers are with the little guy & your no-so-little girl.
thanks everyone. i can't say why i was feeling the way i was feeling. i guess because part of my motivation was to also drum up needed business and that made me feel like i was exploiting someone else's suffering.

so i went forward and created them a little logo (that they can use for other events our bike community is working on) and a little web banner to promote my portion of what i am trying to do:

i have good news to report though. the surgery was able to get all of the tumor. and as of yesterday he is back to being a vivacious little boy. his dad posted up this video yesterday that i just love.

anyhow...I can't wait to go visit little Kaiden this weekend. as a mom I can't help but feel moved to action knowing how much medical expenses can be and how thankful I am that my children are physically healthy.
hahaha...my rates are typically free for friends. :)

Lisa- You are very skilled in your crafts - all of them. Love this banner and the logo. I know who I will be contacting for graphic art design - are your rates very reasonable? - a mbp discount perhaps?
hahahaha...a little too late on that advice Rick. :) but i hear you. i guess it's just in my nature to offer help in what i do well versus selling my services. i've just never been good at that. not to people I know anyhow.

You're doing a good thing. I don't think it's exploitation at all. And I'm sorry to hear about your own child and this one too. It's never a bad thing to help people.
well yesterday i got to visit with Kaiden and his family. what a great way to lift one's spirit, spending time with such a sweet little boy. he seems so oblivious to what is happening to him. that's a good thing.

today i set up my web site to not only be able to purchase gift certificates through paypal FINALLY...but i've also included a donate button that links to the family's paypal account created for donations. i love when i am able to figure out new things for my site. :)

here's Kaiden and I reading yesterday.

What a great picture of you to together Lisa
