I have a neighbor who recently was told he had a collapsed cervical disc. He wants me to do some massage work on it, but I am not sure how to go about it. He has received a note from his physician for the go ahead but I am still a little on edge.

Has anyone ever had success with helping a collapsed disc, or any tips and tricks you can share will be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks a bunch, from sunny Southwest Florida!

can massage help? Yes, but you need medical clearance for this one, the surrounding vertebrae need to be stable, and you should be very careful about turning the head. You won't be working on the disc, but to releive the muscles that are jamming everything together, namely the scalenes, levator scaupla and the splenius cervicis and capitis. If you know another therapist in the area with the right expertise, this would be a good one to refer out. Golden Rule: When in doubt, refer it out!

Thank you! I really appreciate it! :)

Kay is right.  When in doubt, refer it out.  However I work on those kind of people all day long.  But I have been doing this kind of work for thrity years.  I would feel very comfortable working on that person.  The worst thing that can happen when I work on someone is nothing.  Its really hard to get advise via typing.   There are a bunch of people in that past that I could not help, that I could help now.  Thats just how it is.  I wish I could work on him.  Thats the kind of client I want now.  Maybe find another therapist with a lot of experience.   And if that therapist helps your client.  Have that therapist teach you what he or she did.  Its really hard if not impossible to get appropriate advice online.

Thank you all! It makes a lot of sense. I know it is hard to give advice over the Internet but I can understand what you are trying to say. I will take it all into consideration. Now I just need to find a therapist around here that can help.
Thanks again!!

Jessica - just to add, if not already obvious - and I apologize in advance if that's the case. I would, with permission and comfort, accompany, or at least debrief with the therapist you refer your patient to so that you can gain insights and know-how. You will eventually want to get involved and not turn away business, and you've got to start at some point. Why not take advantage of this learning opportunity?

No apologies needed, I appreciate any and all feedback. :)
