Several ways open to us.  Get a massage yourself!  Read books and articles about massage, physical therapy, osteopathy, even chiropractic (from which many excellent soft tissue release techniques are derived).  Research online (NIH website is easily searched, and will guide you to papers of interest to massage therapists.  And, last but not least, give -- give-- an extra half hour or hour or even needed follow up sessions to effectively treat the pain of a client or clients who have to scrape together the cost of a single session.  This last is especially important, for few massage therapists entered our profession with the hope of becoming wealthy: we invested time and money and our best efforts to become skilled massage therapists because we believe in therapeutic massage's ability to improve quality of life for humanity.
