massage and bodywork professionals

a community of practitioners

My instructors and I are quite disgusted at the behavior and ethics of many of the schools in our area.  Maybe we are idealists, but we're interested in opening our own school.  I have the financial backing and I'm also looking to see if there is any government support in our rural area for new businesses.  But where do we begin?

Hi Kelly
What state do you live in?
You will have to see if there is a massage board and what the requirements are
Usually there is LOTS of paperwork
You will have to create/write lesson plans, curriculum etc.

I have written many for other schools - let me know if you need help/consulting

After you get all the requirements, paperwork - the writing begins
There is often an onsite visit from the board.

So some states require you have your location in order meeting
all fire requirements too.

It would be easier to email me at massageproce@gmail.com if you have other questions

Kelly, what state are you in? It is typically the state's department of education that handles vocational schools. You would start by contacting them to see what the requirements are.
I am in Tennessee near Nashville. I know there are six schools in the area that have massage. Only two of them, IMO, are really focused on massage as a career and care about their students. But one school is very pricey and one school only accepts 8 students per term. So I would like to think there is room for another school that cares about the field and cares about its students. I hate the way my school sees each student in terms of dollar signs. The last straw was broken on Friday when I received a report from our home office (in another state) showing each student in terms of 'profit' and 'loss' and issuing the demand that we save 20% on losses (including supplies!) on each student. Really! I felt like mailing the report to the local paper.
Hey lady Work with the Department of Education in your state for setting of the logistics of the school. Get a hold of a sales rep at Mosby Elsevier (link below) and explain what you are doing. There is a comprehensive program guide that provide most all the information you are seeking. Ask for access. Mention my name- Sandy Fritz. I strongly suggest you work with one publisher for all your textbooks needs- I of course hope you will be interested in the books I write for Mosby Elsivier and know that you can find what you need from the book list. (link below). Let the publisher resources that come with the books develop the curriculum. All of us authors work together to develop test banks, lesson plans, instructor teaching resource and so much more . See what is available before recreating the wheel. Each book also has access to a full online learning platform just like blackboard. no additional cost and there are two online courses already done one for the sciences and one for pathology. I suggest you integrate e-learning from the beginning. If you need more info contact me at my website sandyfritz.info
