UPDATE ON HB 446

It appears that an amendment will be made to make licensing voluntary rather than eliminating it altogether.  Remember, this is a proposed amendment to the house bill; the journey to a law, if one is indeed enacted, is still in the early stages.

Here's the latest from AMTA/NH:

Update on House Bill 446
Published Tuesday, June 28, 2011

The subcommittee made up of Representatives, Chairman: John Sytek, Spec Bowers, Peter Schmidt and Carol Vita assembled and stated that not much would be done with HB 446 during today's meeting. Vickie Branch from the AMTA-NH Chapter Government Relations Committee attended the meeting for an hour while they discussed another bill first and then during a break, questions were asked whether 446 would be addressed today as time was running out. Instead, Representative Bowers stated that the language of the bill would change as he has drafted an amendment to be added. Before the amendment can be made public and posted on the internet it needs to be reviewed and voted on by both the subcommittee and the full committee (Executive Departments and Administration) The reason it is not made public is because this amendment is a draft  and in no way final – it has nothing to do with lack of transparency.

Rep Bowers did share this amendment with us. The Massage Licensing Department, The Massage Therapy Advisory Board along with ABMP, National and NH AMTA will be reviewing the language. In short, Rep Bowers is proposing that licensing become voluntary.

We will keep you updated. The next sub-committee meeting won’t be until August, however, we will be working hard to communicate and educate our reps during the next month.

Any questions or concerns can be directed to Vickie Branch, your government relations chair at govrelations@amta-nh.org

Has there been any updates on what's going on with this strange bill they were working on to eliminate licensing?  Everything I've read seems to say it's still in limbo.

I am offering two unique workshops in Manchester NH in late August.  The first, Indian Champissage™ (Head Massage) is a 3-day course for 21 CE hours. The second, Kansa Vatki Foot Massage™, is a 1-day course for 7 CE hours.  Both courses are NCBTMB approved (450489-07) and FL approved (50-10661).

What:     Indian Champissage™ (Head Massage)

When:    August 26-28 (Fri/Sat/Sun) 9:00 - 5:00 each day

Where:   Best Western Plus Executive Court Inn

Indian Champissage has been popular in India for over a thousand years.  The head, neck, shoulders and upper back - areas where tension is more likely to accumulate - are gently, firmly and rhythmically massaged until the pressure simply melts away.  This unique therapy combines physical and subtle massage with energy balancing to produce feelings of perfect peace.  It is a wonderful alternative to seated chair massage.

What:     Kansa Vatki Foot Massage

When:    August 29 (Mon) 9:00 - 5:00

Where:  Best Western Plus Executive Court Inn

Kansa Vatki Foot Massage is a beautiful and relaxing healthcare modality which balances the body, mind and spirit.  This unique treatment, steeped in centuries of Ayurvedic ceremony, incorporates ghee (clarified butter).  The heart of the treatment involves vigorously rubbing the soles of the feet with a

3-metal bowl to draw heat and toxins out of the body thereby inducing tremendous relaxation.  The Kansa Vatki Foot Massage is deeply revitalizing for tired feet and legs, and it makes a perfect addition to reflexology.

Well, I know in Dover I have seen the price for just a 1 hour massage varies dramatically, but I have no idea why.  I'm also trying to figure out, there are already quite a few therapists there, would there be a clientell for me.  From there I gotta figure out whether it is better to be self-employed like I already am, or to be an employee....  I'm mainly just curious about the basics of the area.

Bethany,

There are a lot of great massage therapists and bodyworkers in New Hampshire.  I'm sure many of them would be happy to talk with you.  Is there anything about NH that I can answer for you?
