Hi All! I am halfway through my LMT training program in Illinois at The New School for Massage, Bodywork & Healing. Great program. In the past, I completed graduate studies in both theology and psychology. So. I am in the process of integrating all three areas--body, soul, and spirit. Did you take Lomi Lomi? Do you practice it mechanically or with the spirituality it encompasses? As with all indigenous traditional forms of massage it is a holistic modality joining mind-body-spirit-environment. The fourth is often forgotten by new agers but is very much a part of all traditional forms of massage (it includes family, friends, the elements and more). How do you extract parts and call it a whole? I worry that this is happening to massage/bodywork as we try to fit a health care model where specialization only runs rampant.

I feel spirituality is a part of my career in massage - actually it has 'enhanced' it.

The more I study, especially indigenous healing practices, the more I realize the value and degree of necessity it holds in our work.

 

I have found the more I open to it, the more my clients are grateful too. They appreciate the "presence", the connection and even the silent prayer or permission to say a prayer or set an intention.

 

I get out of the way, and let the divine source provide what the client is ready to receive.  I have found that "technique" is not what is always necessary and only a small part of the healing process.

 

My spiritual path has increased my awareness and sensitivity and made me a much better person .

I totally agree with your first sentence Nancy. Even those who claim to be agnostic, as I once did many years ago. We and all things are part and parcal in quality, but not quanity of the Creative Source, whatever name we give to it. We humans are hard wired, longing to know who we are, why we're here and our relationship with God/Source. Where the heart chakra lies int the breast bone area is the alchemical heart. It is the portal to experiencial knowledge, where self experiences GODSELF, within self and all of life.

Personally I don't think its possible to be alive without having a relationship with God. The quality of that relationship, the acknowledgement of that relationship, the cherishing of that relationship guides our spirituality (or lack of it). I believe that relationship with God is natural and will be noticed more as we learn to relax, love, and think for ourselves, as we free ourselves from pain and restriction.

Spirit, God, energy body, aura, soul, these are all non-physical parts of ourselves. Perhaps even words for the same thing?

Well, I'm not a phylosipher or a deep thinker; just a simple massage therapist who wants to make a difference in people's lives - even just a little one.  I did comment here back in June, and  I've read some very "interesting" comments on this site; most of which I don't comprehend.  I sit here and go "huh?"  :-)   When I read books or magazines on energy work, it makes no sense to me.  When I think of spirit, whether it's my spirit or someone elses spirit, I can't separate it from the God who put it there.  I'm not talking about religion with it's rules or regulations, I'm talking about a relationship.

 I know there is a lot of spirituality and spiritualism out there that folks talk about or deal with or believe in without God being part of it; I realize that.  To each his own I guess, everyone has the right to choose for themselves; and I try to respect that.

I'll probably get shot down and/or critized on this site for my comments; but I came across this quote the other day and I just had to share it with you all.

Thank you for your many words Chris. I like the word "presence". I am constantly learning that when awareness is focused in my head, I am living from behind my eyes and life has a way of throwing me off center. I am learning more and more to live life as if from the camera lense of my heart, a much deeper level. I feel more fully incarnated living from the heart center and this creates whole body awareness. The spiritual heart is the alchemical vessal that transmutes all things. Personal power has a ring of egotism to it. When living from the heart the "I" which is the paradox of being simutaneously one, yet different, is "empowered" to allow the ALL to work through it. Thus allowing all others to be empowered in the same way.
