hey trina I think you can check to see if the name you want is available by checking out to see if it has been trademarked: http://www.directincorporation.com/company_search.php

Thanks Greg :) Ya I'm thinking the safest bet is to just get that business license. I'm in Spokane so I'll contact someone here about the details. And thanks for the reminder about the license number on the business cards...that would suck to forget that. lol

When I set up my initial business I spoke with a person at the City of Seattle and they were very clear that I needed a business license whether I was working out of a clinic or in someone's home.  Your best bet for "the final word" would be to contact someone at the city for where you are located (if in Seattle, the number is 206.296.6600).  Good luck!  Also, when you get your cards, a new ruling just came out from the WA State DOH that you must have your LMP license number on any advertisements you produce (including business cards).

Hello fellow Washingtonian LMPs :) I have a few questions that I probably learned in school, but can't remember right now...I am a new therapist at a chiro office but want to also do massage on the side on my own. I just want to make sure I'm not doing anything illegal that will get me in trouble. What are the boundaries with needing a business license? I have a client that is wanting me to do massages for a spa party for her and some of her friends at her house. I'm thinking thats ok? Also I want to get my own business cards and reserve the name I have in mind. Any thoughts?
