Tian Di Bamboo Massage
Sunday & Monday
May 23rd & 24th, 2010
9:00 AM - 6:00 PM

Tian Di ("Heaven/Earth") Bamboo Massage is a new and innovative style of massage therapy and bodywork that incorporates ancient Chinese principles and philosophy based on the five elements. Students will learn the use of bamboo as an instrument to do a complete bodywork session, including the use of different sizes and cuts of bamboo sticks (Cho sticks) as an extension of your hands, forearms and elbows. This technique will help you to work deeper and more effectively, saving hands and wrists.

In addition to learning how to use bamboo sticks to do treatment, the basics of Chinese cupping and Gua Sha will be covered. Cupping is a method of applying acupressure by creating a vacuum next to the client's skin. In Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) it involves placing glass, plastic, or bamboo cups on the skin with a vacuum-- in this class we will work with plastic cups. Cupping has been found to penetrate the tissue four inches into the body, causing tissues to release toxins, activating the lymphatic system, clearing stretch marks, and improving varicose veins. Cupping is the best deep tissue massage available.

Gua Sha, Gua meaning "to scrape or extract", and Sha, meaning "sand or toxins", is a traditional ancient Chinese healing technique that dates back over two thousand years. This ancient method is used to promote Chi or bioelectric vital life energy, blood circulation and the removal of toxic heat, stagnant blood and lymph fluid from the body.

SUPPLIES: You will need to bring 2 sheets, 2 pillowcases, 2 large towels, 1 bottle of Witch Hazel( in a spray bottle), and Massage oil (no creams, please).

The bamboo sticks and cups will be provided during this class. If you would like to take them home, sets will be available for purchase.

Bamboo set-$75, Cupping set including Gua Sha $45

In this class, therapists will learn techniques for the muscles of the core: the diaphragm, psoas, iliacus, and quadratus lumborum. Learn proper techniques for working through the abdomen to address the structural muscles of the back. Myofascial release techniques will also be demonstrated that will enable the therapist to work painlessly through the deeper viscera. This class is a must for clinical therapists or others wanting to improve their techniques that address low back issues or other structural distortions of the spine.

Please eat a light meal before attending this class due to the amount of abdominal work involved.

SUPPLIES: one set of linens, massage lotion or cream, one hand towel, one pillow case.

Lessons from Esalen ® - An Introduction
Saturday & Sunday
April 10th and 11th, 2010
9:00 AM - 5:30 PM

Esalen® massage is an eclectic form that is grounded in Swedish massage but freely borrows from other forms, e.g., Trigger Point, Thai, Energy, etc. It is difficult to describe but wonderful to experience. Classes consist of lectures, readings, discussions, a video, demonstrations, and hands-on practice. This type of massage treats the mind and body as a whole and attempts to bring about a sense of well-being through inducing a deep state of consciousness. The massage is done in a reverent manner and consists, in part, of long, flowing, rhythmic strokes combined with specific detail work, as well as elegant stretches and rotations. Emphasis for the therapist is on developing intuition when working with the client rather than performing a set routine. While each therapist develops his/her own set of strokes, stretches, and rotations, these tools are never used in the same way twice.

Energetic Hot Stone
Saturday & Sunday
March 27 & 28
9:00 AM - 6:00 PM

This course trains students how to utilize hot stones to connect the body with the mind and the spirit. We will use age-old techniques to create harmony throughout the body using placement stones, chakra balancing, rituals and smudging. We will be utilizing the energetic anatomy to enhance the overall effects of thermal therapy. We will also cover the basics (equipment, set-up, sanitization and how to harvest your own stones).

If you have never had a hot stone massage class, or if you have learned the basics, this class will educate you on the energetic component of hot stone massage and integrate your skills to tune into the subtle energy fields of the body.

This course is highly experiential, will offer hands-on training to enhance your intuition, and benefit you as a therapist by eliminating undue stress on thumbs and wrists, allowing the stones to melt away tension.

Stones will be supplied. Please bring: 1 flat sheet (Queen or Full, 1 bath sheet or beach towel, 2 pillow cases, 1 face cradle cover, 2 hand towels, 1 washcloth, and massage oil. Be sure to come hydrated and bring plenty of water.
