Milestones

Anytime I reach a milestone, whether it’s one of those birthdays that ends in zero or some other momentous occasion, it causes me to stop and reflect on the things I’ve done. I see what worked and what didn’t….what I coulda, shoulda, woulda done given another chance. And I pat myself on the back for those things that turned out well.

Next Monday is the 8th anniversary of my clinic. In 2003, I had been working for five years in the massage school I attended. I loved my job. I loved the…

Holistic Nutrition

Eating Disorders

It is important for a client who has been diagnosed with an eating disorder to get adequate nutrition and, in many cases of bulimics, to eat enough but not purge.  Eating disorders can generate many nutrient deficiencies that my further exacerbate the progress of the individual.

According to a student in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (1985, p. 450), individuals with both bulimia and anorexia are likely to report…

SELF TREATMENT FOR PLANTAR FASCIITIS BY JESSE JAMES RETHERFORD

Over the past week, I have seen a “mini-epidemic” — two new clients and email correspondence with a third — of a common but painful foot injury, plantal fasciitis. Living in Austin, with such an active outdoors culture, plantar fasciitis is one of the more common issues I treat. It is also one of the most common foot injuries in the United States.  As reported by Pubmed, two million Americans suffer from plantar fasciitis each year…

client dismissal

Ok, so we have a client that has been seeing me for massage since 2005 (off and on) and after continual conversations has given me reason to dismiss them from our spa.  Therapists come out mortified because she keeps making "sex" sounds during the massage session.  She had been talked to by me a while back and was acting appropriately for some time but yesterday my staff informed me that she did this very loudly and other pedicure clients heard and were upset by the behavior.  It was a male…

Professional Jealousy: Not Professional at All

Have you ever been a victim of professional jealousy? Even worse, have you been one to perpetuate it? I personally can’t think of any motivation to be so jealous of a fellow massage therapist that I would do something to try and sabotage their business, or repeat rumors or outright untruths about someone in the hope of ruining his/her reputation. And yet, I hear about this every day.

Someone wrote me recently that some current students from the massage school that she had attended had…

FOAM ROLLER THERAPY FOR BEGINNERS

It is estimated that over 116 million Americans suffer from debilitating chronic pain each year, of which low back pain is the most common. According to The American Academy of Pain Medicine, “Back pain is the leading cause of disability in Americans under 45 years old.  More than 26 million Americans between the ages of 20-64 experience frequent back pain.” There is a proven and effective way to treat most forms of chronic…

A COMMON CAUSE OF LOW BACK AND SCIATIC PAIN – THE PIRIFORMIS

As a licensed massage therapist, I specialize in chronic pain and injury management using deep tissue massage therapy.  Most of my clients come in with a common complaint: pain in the low back, hips (primarily on one side), and/or shooting pain or numbness down the back of the leg.

More than two million Americans suffer either from back pain or a form of sciatica that is often misdiagnosed…

My 'Job' As A Massage Therapist

Ang and I went out last night for a few beers at the Village Pub in Summerlin. I was chatting with a gentlemen and he asked, "What do you do for a living?" I told him I was a massage therapist who specializes in orthopedic massage, assisting folks with all their aches and pains. Continued, below...

He then asked me, “Do you like it?”  At this point it was just too funny.  This huge, sh** eating grin just bubbled up out of me, and before I could reply, he commented again,…

Report from the World Massage Festival

Champ and I got home from the World Massage Festival this morning, and while I’m tired, I must say it’s that good, satisfying kind of tired, the kind you feel when you’ve really had a great time. We certainly did! This year’s Festival was held on the beautiful campus of Western Carolina University in…

Hello evryone, just wanted to tell a little about myself.  I live in Gillespie IL very small town.  I work 14miles from where I live. Carlinville IL at 5th Dimensions Family Salon.   I have been there for 31/2 years.  I love what I do.  Is this economy effecting your business?  It has very much effected mine. Most have gone to monthly only to not coming in. I have run specials, did drawings for $'s off the regular price.  Etc.  What else can I do to get them…

Massage Marketing: 4 Steps to Creating Irresistable Testimonials

Potential clients want to know you are legit and good at what you do. Hearing that from satisfied clients (and not just you) underlines the message. I don’t know about you, but when I’m looking for help from a professional, I ask around. Then I go to his or her website. If there are testimonials I read them. “Oh,” I think, “she helps people with the same problem I have.”

How do you create great testimonials?

1. Ask! When a client tells you, “My legs and…

Massage & Martial Arts

It may seem paradoxical to include martial arts practice as an important aspect to being a massage therapist. When we think of the martial arts, words such as, ‘opponent’ ‘defeat’, and ‘against’ often come to mind.

However, aikido differs from disciplines such as…

Cultivating Excellence

I often hear from massage therapists who have made the jump from lone practitioner to entrepreneur, and the biggest struggle they seem to face is staffing problems. One of my favorite bloggers, Steph Lasch Lmt, wrote about some of her issues earlier this week. She’s hardly the lone ranger. And I know from my interactions with her that she’s like me–a workaholic and a…
