Urgent request from CAMTC for letters to CA State Senators

Late last night I received word that the California Police Chiefs Association of Police Chiefs (CPCA) is still working to damage and impede the success of CAMTC in moving toward state-level regulation of massage therapy in California. CAMTC is urging all supportive parties to write a letter to be sent to state senators as soon as possible urging them to kill AB-1822…

Where's Joe Friday When We Really Need Him?

In the long running radio and TV show Dragnet, Sgt Joe Friday often made statements like "All we want are the facts, ma'am" and "All we know are the facts, ma'am". This evolved into the iconic phrase "Just the facts, ma'am" in a parody of Dragnet by Stan Freberg called St. George and the Dragonet.

Unfortunately, at least… Continue

California Police Cheifs Rallying Support to Kill State Level Regulation

According to a newly out Massage Today article, California police chiefs are rallying support to kill state level regulation of massage therapy implemented last year via the California Massage Therapy Council (CAMTC) as passage of SB 731. While this is being framed by the police chiefs as an anti-trafficking measure, it is actually a turf battle to retain local control rather than to let massage therapy be regulated as are other health-care… Continue

California's AB 1822 - How Cynical Can You Get?

I just put up a new blog post and action alert on the AB 1822 attempt to undermine California's new state-level certification program and return to local agency licensing. AB 1822 will come before the CA Assembly Business and Professions Committee next Tuesday, 20 April. This is an attempt pushed by a small contingent of police chiefs, while most cities and… Continue

CAMTC Statistics through 5 December

I received a weekly update today on activities of the California Massage Therapy Council (CAMTC), the private nonprofit created under state law (SB 731) and legislative review to certify massage practitioners and therapists within California. The certifications exempt those certified from local licensing laws.

As of 5 Dec, 9581 applications were received and a1621 certifications have been approved and mailed..

In the week from 28 Nov to 5 Dec, CAMTC received 392… Continue

Best Practices in Using an Automated Competency Management System

One of the benefits I've had of using Twitter over the past year+ has come in connections and awareness of what others are doing. Since much of requirements in massage regulation and training are supposed to be about competency, I have, over the years, become interested in how that works in areas in which return on investment (ROI) is considered to be critical.

So it caught my eye today when a noticed flowed by that the 2nd of the three part series of articles on best practices in… Continue

As Medicine Pushes toward Evidence-Based Efficacy

Sooner or later, moving a part of massage practices into the health care realm is going to require a split between the evidence-based part and the no-scientific-basis (and, in some parts, direct contradiction to known science) part. The reasons are all too clear, as seen in this article by one of the well-regarded heath care "twitterers" I follow.

The Doctor as a Placebo

A small bit of discussion around my last post brought to mind cardiologist Bernard Lown's book, "The Lost Art of Healing". I recalled Lown's story of a very sick cardiology patient who, upon overhearing that his heart was galloping, felt the way open to getting better. Not knowing that galloping was a not particularly good sign, he decided that if his heart was good enough to gallop then it… Continue

Parliamentary Committee Hearing: Evidence Check: Homeopathy

Picked this up via @jackofkent (Twitter feed). Discussion model that one can expect more and more in anything health care connected. Evidence Check: Homeopathy.

Duke Health Connect: The Detox Delusion

The Sprint 2009 issue of Duke University's Health Connect talks about The Detox Delusion.

Give your body more credit. We have evolved over two-and-a-half million years with highly effective detoxification systems -- such as the liver and kidneys. We naturally detox most substances that could be harmful. Our bodies are designed to do this -- if…

Making Health Care Better

I came across a NY Times article on Making Health Care Better that is worth the read. It provides a good example of using competency management to improve patient outcomes in specific areas of practice--a concept we good well adapt to the inclusion of massage therapy within health care. It also points out the process of self-reflection currently being done in multiple areas of… Continue

Streetlights and Shadows

I've been reading Gary Klein's new book: Streetlights and Shadows. It's a great, research-based foray into the nature of expertise exercised within the real world. It also doesn't read like an academic paper. You can learn about the pilot who managed to land the "Gimili Glider" when it ran out of jet fuel at 41,000 feet and both engines quit, shutting down the crt displays and hydraulic controls. You can also… Continue
