massage and bodywork professionals

a community of practitioners

I am just rolling out a new Massage Therapy Program at my school and am looking to hire a clinic/lab supervisor. The role only requires 30/hrs/week and the clinic is not open to the public just yet. This role would require a certified massage therapist to supervise students while in the lab and answer questions and demonstrate as needed. Does anyone have any ideas on what I should pay this person?

Melissa,
In most of the schools where I have worked, an instructor has supervised clinic for their regular hourly rate. However, when I was in school clinic was supervised by a recent graduate for a stipend.
Hi Melissa
I've seen it done several ways. Some schools pay 50% of instructor pay aka an admin. salary. Usually around
$ 12/hr - $ 15/hr. However, if you really want this to be a productive and effective clinic, pay someone what they are truly worth to address this critical component.

I used to own a school and have been a director for several across the country! Clinic should not be something just to bring in money from the public.

When students don't have a client, I feel they should also be doing case studies, running reception, participating in marketing projects. etc.

I would not suggest a recent graduate/student overseeing the clinic as this is an important component for students to refine their skills. Also many states require a licensed massage therapist to oversee clinic. Many places unfortunately do not pay much attention to students while they are in clinic and therefore many things go unseen, uncorrected etc.
Thank you so much for the information. It appears as though my thought process was headed in the right direction. Thanks again!!

Hi Melissa:

We used to have an MT "supervisor" who organised both logistics (phone line, bookings, laundry, money etc.) and client care. She made about $30/hr.

We now have two positions:
1) a MT "technologist" who oversees logistics -- $20/hr;
2) an MT "Clinical Instructor" who directs client care and teaches in a way that is compatible with our program -- $50+/hr.

However you organise it, be very careful about letting anyone supervise who does not understand in detail what you teach in the classroom. Experience in practice is not nearly enough...the person(s) must be able to guide students in a way that reinforces what you teach in the classroom...

In metro-NY where I used to teach, a starting clinic supervisor was paid $25 per hour. On average, we were responsible for around 15 treatment rooms per hour.
