Gloves
So I've ran into a few times that I've had to wear gloves during a massage. Some of the time it's because I have a cut on my hand and a few times it's because of a 'health' reason with the client. Usually when I wear gloves, my clients don't care. I have had a few complain to me after the massage because I had a glove on (the cut hand) or gloves.
So my question to all of you is if you have to wear gloves during a massage, do you let the client know before the massage?

Well if the cut is too bad.. then you dont work till it heals. If you can give a good massage with just a minor bit of handicap.. Then tell the client that you cut yourself or whatever. But you can still give a good massage as long I wear this glove. And with oil, you can't even feel it. Thats kinda what I say.. .or have done.. Clients seem to accept it. When it happend to me.. I had to change techniques some, but I could still give a good massage. You're just telling the truth. And if you felt that you didn't give a good massage because of the glove. You could discount the service some.

I wouldn't give a massage if the cut was bad. That would just be uncomfortable for me and the client. These are just small cuts where I wear gloves just for safety reasons if anything. We've all had clients that have not told us about 'xyz' illness or whatever, so if I have any doubt whether my cut is more than a paper cut, then I wear a glove. And it's not like it's often.

When it's a simple cut, I use Liquid Skin or some similar liquid bandage. Warning: it can sting like a mother when you put it on your cut. But once it's on, it's a solid seal and won't come off after mulitple massages or hand washing.
For client related stuff, I put on the gloves. When I worked at a spa I would say "oh the lights are so low here, I'm not sure what that is.I'm just going to put on gloves for this part to protect you and me (and my four other clients after you!)". I've never had a known complaint about it. I think if you phrase it as "protecting you and me" that gives the client the impression that *all* client health is your priority and they tend not to complain.

I have used gloves and finger cots before and didnt have any complaints. I do mention it prior to the massage. Just informing them that I needed to wear them due to a cut I had. Ask if they have an allergy. And I have asked them to let me know if its bothersome. I just made sure to lube them up a tiny bit before working on client. when I ask them if they can feel it or if it feels different they say no. Feels good to them!
I don't like wearing gloves or finger cots. So I will usually put liquid bandage on the minor cuts if its a small nick from trimming finger nails or something like that. And like somebody already mentioned it burns like hell. But it works. I also use waterproof bandages. The clear ones. They work fantastic. Especially if it is a little tender (i burned the side of my finger w/ curling iron. no blister but still tender to touch) it provides a little cushion. They stay on no problem and the client doesn't feel it at all. I change them between clients just to be safe.

As a rule I will talk with clients about any changes from our normal procedure. A few have thanked me for letting them know and decided to reschedule instead. I do get consistent feedback that the gloved massage is less relaxing. Are there gloves designed for massage that fit a little more snuggly so there isn't wrinkled glove material? I have very small hands....
