My best client education resource has always been me. In the prior 20 years I worked in a spa. I was always surprised that the vast majority of my clients, even the ones getting therapeutic treatments( Rolfing, Physical therapy, therapeutic massage, chiropractic, medical doctors)for some kind of pain issue, never heard of trigger points?
I would hear something like.....I get therapeutic massage at my Chiropractors clinic. They are trying to balance my hips, but I’m just here to relax. Or, I have a pinched nerve . I’m seeing a medical doctor for that. I don’t want you to try and fix me because I can’t take the pain. I’m just here to relax. Or my back hurts because I have arthritis, or I have no curve in my neck. On and on and on. All kinds of reasons for there pain. But I hardly ever heard the word trigger points or, myofascial pain syndrome.
So I became my clients educational resource. In the spa that did cause problems from time to time. After all, people were coming in there Just To Relax. And they didn’t necessarily want to hear me talking about trigger points. Of course many did, and they got better. One of the things I did was email them information on trigger points. And I always included this web page link.
That is a great client educational source when it comes to trigger points.
Now that I’m working with an anesthesiologist in his pain management clinic, the trigger point thing is no longer an issue. The entire staff, PAs, nurses, everyone, are well aware of trigger points. They do trigger point injections.
But I’m still my clients number one educational resource. Because my style of soft tissue work is very different from what they know or have ever experienced. After all I discovered and developed it. It very much helps for them ( clients/patients) to have an idea of my type of therapy. So now I’m actually giving them the link to my Holographic Acupressure thread on this very website. http://www.massageprofessionals.com/forum/topics/holographic-acupre...
They can go over it, read about it, watch videos, and come in excited, ready for their therapy.
Basically, the more your client/patient knows about your work, the more effective it becomes.
So I am my clients educational resource.
