Dear Joan -

Thanks very much for your post on polarity.

Here is some information on polarity you might find interesting.

Warmly, Ariana Vincent, Ariana Institute,

Polarity Therapy is a holistic healing art based on balancing life energy.

Polarity Therapy was founded by Dr. Randolph Stone, D.O., D.C., N.D., (1890-1981) who traveled around the world studying and integrating many healing arts including Chiropractic, Osteopathic, Naturopathy, Homeopathy, Ayurveda, and Chinese Medicine.

Dr. Stone believed that life was much more than chemistry and that healing was greater than freedom from symptoms. He saw life as a spiritual journey based on life energy principles and healing as our total alignment with that journey.

Polarity Therapy is an energetic healing modality. At the heart of Polarity Therapy is the view that each individual is animated by universal life energy. When we experience an imbalance in the circulation of of our life energy this most often leads to mental and emotional distresses that can bring on different types of physical illness. When our life energy is balanced the result is a healthy body, clarity in our mental thought processes, and a healthy emotional body.

A skilled Polarity Therapist is trained in different methods that guide them in finding and correcting these imbalance in the life force energy. This includes hands-on bodywork, counseling on nutrition; Polarity yoga; and verbal counseling.

Polarity practitioners work from the premise that healing comes from within and the practitioner and client work together to allow the client's own inner healing response to emerge. By developing an understanding and sensitivity to life energy a Polarity practitioner can systematically evaluate its movement. During the process of a Polarity bodywork session, a client may spontaneously experience emotions and/or feel the need to talk about their life. This often times happens when tense and/or compressed tissues begin to relax and unwind. The Polarity practitioner then reflects back a client's thoughts and emotions while continuing to facilitate the unwinding process. At any time the client may stop talking and the session then moves naturally back to silent bodywork.

Polarity bodywork is very gentle and painless and Polarity verbal communication is non-directive with the intention of helping a client become aware of his or her process. A Polarity practitioner may also recommend simple nutritional changes and/or exercises to support the energy balancing. Polarity session times vary based on the issue being addressed. Clients are asked to wear loose fitting cotton clothing. The number of sessions a client receives is based on individual needs and progress. Most Polarity clients have sessions every week or every other week. However different client's require different interventions.

Good morning,
I am a Usui reiki master and new jersey state certified massage therapist. I combine reiki with massage all the time and as you probably already know it is a wonderful combination. I'm thinking of taking a Polarity course and was hoping if someone had any feed back on Polarity?

A good website to refer christians to is http://www.christianreiki.org/. Very good information and clarifies some of the mysteries around reiki.

Good question and I think Laurie is exactly right. The RM who attuned me to Level I was very religious and she took the same stance as Laurie's friend: that Reiki cannot work with Jesus being called into the session. I didn't care for the break from the traditional Usui teachings as I a am a purist when it comes to all techniques, so I moved on to another RM for the rest of my attunements. Laurie is right though: Jesus, Holy Spirit, Light, Universal Energy, Creator's Love... it is all Light. Your client needs to figure out with what healing means to *her* first, where it emanates from, how it happens. With super religious people, I outright ask them how they believe the body heals. I believe there is an infinite Source in all of us that works through us to bring about healing (power/light/love/universal energy that made the body heals the body), but they don't need to know what *I* think. Much easier to work with what *they* think and otherwise, just do our work. Some call that Source God, Jesus, Jehovah, Allah, Spirit, Light, etc. Personally, with the religious, I'd ask more and speak less, and then give a simple answer that works within *their* paradigm because that's what they have to work with and in the end, and how well Reiki works for them will depend upon how well it fits their paradigm. Again, to echo Laurie, it's all Light. They more you understand their paradigm and keep it in that framework, the easier the Reiki will help. I am also an Asian bodyworker and I've found that with some clients, it's pretty much a "need to know basis." No reason to tell them all about Five Element and Taoist cosmology, just what they need to experience healing. Sometimes that's nothing more than "let's focus on your breathing, allowing your body soften into the table, and letting go of any stressful thoughts for the next hour." Energy is energy. It knows where to go.

I have a really religious friend that says all things must be done through Christ and I say I think Jesus was the first Reiki Master. Upon having this talk with my teacher said non-religious (still spiritual) call it "Universal Energy" Religious think of it as "The Holy Spirit". Either way it's light.

When a client, who has never had a Reiki session, or has no idea what it is, asks, "Just what is Reiki and what does it do?", What is an easy answer?

And what can you tell REALLY religious people who believe it is the work of the devil, or that you could be evil and harm them in some way? I'm sure that ,at least one of questions has come up for just about everyone.

I am a Reiki Master Teacher with my own massage business. Much of our clientele is now Reiki-wise and we do a good deal of energy work here. Our outreach is a quarterly Healing Attunement event timed for the natural seasonal transitions between autumn, winter, spring and summer at the equinox and solstices. We've found this is a very powerful introduction to Reiki. I'm just starting my "formal" teaching this year, starting with a few Reiki 1 classes.Good to have a group here dedicated to Reiki!

Helen
