Hi everyone! I just joined today, and I wanted to introduce myself. I live in Coatesville, PA. I generally visit my clients at their homes, although I do offer my home to my clients as well. My two main interests with massage are infant/pediatric massage and working with children & adults with special needs or disabilities. Massage is my "part-time" job right now; full-time, I work as a social worker for adults with disabilities.

Yes, ice is definitely effective and the traditional go-to for cryotherapy, as well as chilled gel packs. I don't like the harsh bite of it when I am receiving the therapy, and I firmly believe one should NEVER stretch cold tissue, which happened to me once during PT several years ago. I was lucky not to have tissue tears. For those who like ice, ice is fabulous. The chilled stones, however, are quite cold without the bitter sting of ice and without the drippy mess. Marble becomes very cold. I use river stone that also gets quite cold. I keep the stones moving slowly, not remaining static, and change them out when they begin to warm. Clients who dread the application of ice accept the cold stones more readily, and they can even be used with care for my fibromyalgia clients when they are healing from injury. No disrespect meant toward ice!

Hi Tom and Carli - I, too, have found the application of moist heat, followed by some myofascial work or even some deep tissue work (especially for the back), and closed with cold application is great for working out tension and fibrosis from chronic facilitation or injury. I usually wait 24-48 hours after an injury, and work at the body's pace to accept the work, never forcing. And I've found that smooth stones chilled in the fridge are more effective than ice packs for the cold application. I do use BioFreeze, good stuff!
