massage and bodywork professionals

a community of practitioners

Hi Everyone.

After a massive layoff and 30 some years in the corporate world, I've had some time to reconsider what I want to do with myself.  I'm in my late 50s, but do still need to work.  For many reasons I've been leaning towards becoming a Massage Therapist.  I'm not interested in spa work, but more therapeutic in nature.

My question is:  Is it too late for me?  I'm in pretty good shape (if a bit to the heavier side!) and never want to see a pair of pantyhose again!

This career sounds like me..... old hippie child that I am.  Just would appreciate some input as to whether this oldie but goodie (I don't look my age at all, by the way) could do it.

Thanks so much !

You can definitely do it if you take care of your body, exercise and stretch regularly, get yourself massaged, and most importantly practice good body mechanics.

If you want to choose a gentler type of massage but still stay in the medical field check out manual lymphatic drainage. It's much easier on your body than deep tissue work. I myself do a lot of pre natal massage which is also much easier on my body.

Good luck and do check out The Institute for Therapeutic Massage, it's a great school to get a strong medical based knowledge.

You can definately do it! It's a very rewarding career that I've enjoyed being a part of for 15 years. It's awesome being a part of something that I love! Get a great education and as you begin your practice, experiment with different therapies and you'll find the one that both your clients and you can benefit from. Through the years I've added more gentle techniques to enable myself to have the longevity that I want as a massage therapist.

Having said that, don't get into the field out of purely financial reasons. There is money to be made, but in this economy, I find it's more difficult now than it was 5 years ago. As long as you're not looking for your corporate paycheck, go for it!!
