Linda, could you post more information about RSD/CRPS. Would a client address it by another name? Is this something that would be diagnosed by a medical practitioner than referred to a massage therapist? Thanks.

yea what do those acronyms mean....?

Like Mark said, the acronyms are Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) Syndrome and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). It is a disorder of the sympathetic nervous system. You can read more about it here:

http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/reflex_sympathetic_dystrophy/det...

The symptoms are very tricky. I have a client, I am able to help her to an extent, but it is chronic. Not like normal pain you can get rid of and be done with. I was hoping to find someone who may have been more successful working with it.

It just occurred to me, if you ever have a client with unusual pain patterns and sensations, they might want to be screened for it.

Its late now...but in the 30 years Ive been doing this...I dont know anything about it....What I do is simple...it really is...I look for sore tender areas.....and its reguardless of any diagnosis....if I can make those go away...Whatever presenting symptoms they have.. just go away...and thats for eight out of Ten that come to me with pain issues...I just focus on that....and everything else is irrelevant...Now thats my perspective only.....I keep it simple...Im a masage therapist...so whatever their problem is...Im just there to make that muscle pain or stress go away, if i can....and more often then naught I can...The ones I cant help...for whatever reason...Know that after a couple of massages....Clients come in with all kinds of diagnosis's...For me.. with what  I do...the diagnosis means nothing... Like the lady i helped in this link...She had a torn labrum...I doint even know what that is.   but I found sore spots and eliminated them....and now she is fine...So the ones i cant help....They need a different level of care...  So?   Ive never even heard of those terms...I talk a lot about massage...But I have a simple goal....Make the pain go away within a few sessions...if I cant.. they move on...Im just a massage therapist..work with sore tight muscles or stressed people or Im a birthday present for someone.. and thats it..    Im kind of dumb on a lot of other levels.  I keep it really simple...   I will check that link out tomorrow..Then maybe give an opinion...for whatever thats worth?   I mean really,,,we are in a huge field...We can see anybody almost.. Its forever learning....You just pick your reality and go for it.  Im into trigger points, and thats it as far as pain goes..for me.

It really is horrible, Gordon. My client is having the electrodes implanted to disrupt the pain signals. We tried very hard to avoid having to do that, but a person can only take so much pain.

Have the electrodes worked?   Is that a guaranteed thing?
