GENERAL BENEFITS OF AROMATHERAPY
(EACH ESSENTIAL OIL CARRIES ITS OWN UNIQUE BENEFITS)
(An excerpt from the Ariana Institute Aromatherapy Course Manual www.arianainstitute.com)

Aromatherapy massage is a gentle massage using essential oils that can be softening, healing, nourishing and rejuvenating to the skin. The general benefits of massage combined with the healing benefits of certain essential oils can be very dynamic. Because essential oils are absorbed through the skin and into the bloodstream, they can affect the nervous system, as well as all other systems of the body. Here are some of the benefits that may be obtained by utilizing essential oils, remembering that each essential oil carries its own unique benefits, in a massage therapy practice:

Physical Benefits
• Relaxes the recipient or stimulates the recipient
• Loosens tight muscles, eases muscular aches and pains, and promotes muscle relaxation
• Calms or stimulates the nervous system (depending on the oil)
• Diminishes tension headaches
• Stimulates circulation
• Assists in reducing nerve entrapment and congestion
• Improves muscle tone
• Improves circulation and lymphatic drainage, and helps to eliminate toxins from the body
• Stimulates the immune system and strengthens resistance to disease

Mental Benefits
• Reduces mental stress
• Enhances capacity for calm thinking
• Assists in mental relaxation

Emotional Benefits
• Calms mental activity or enhances mental activity
• Creates a feeling of well-being
• Reduces levels of anxiety
• Satisfies the need for caring and nurturing touch
• Increases awareness of the mind-body connection
• Releases endorphins, the brain’s natural opiates, which encourages a feeling of well being and confidence
