Spa Work: The Good, The Bad, The Beautiful

Generalities:

a) For your personal growth, spa work is as good as any other process. The experience you gain depends entirely on how you approach the big picture.

b) For your skill development, it is every machine in the gym plus nature hikes too. Spa work is definitely worth a stint, especially if you are just starting out.

c) For business development, it can be a treadmill, unless you have ownership. As an employee it can be a comfortable ride given the right remuneration and benefits package. As an IC it can be a great part-time job to help you pay the bills.

Features:
It can endure steadily over time, there is lots of variety in the food for thought menu, you get to stay as long as you're satisfied, tow the company line, or until your employers decide to let you go.

Assets:
A paycheck with your name on it, possibly health insurance, sometimes 401k, vision, dental. Often good tips and steady clients, sometimes no laundry, no calls, no emails, no marketing, no promoting, no overheads. And love it or leave it convenience.

Liabilities:
Anonymity, you help establish the brand identity of a third-party. Sometimes low pay and/or expensive buy-in to benefits. Sometimes narrow job description parameters and occasional twangs of replaceability syndrome.

Just curious...I have heard that franchise spas, such as Massage Envy don't fairly compensate their MT's. Do you feel as though you are paid well for your sklls?

I work at A Massage Envy and only do no more than 4 massages in a day. My choice. I am okay with 2-3, 4 is the max.

Typically 6-8 massages per day is an average for spas on busy days. It is very seasonal here in Palm Springs, feast or famine. I did all of 3 massages last weekend, trying to gain some privates. As long as you get worked on regularly take good care of yourself and know your limits, burn out shouldn't be an issue.

Hi,
I just joined. I currently work in a spa in Maryland and I love it. I love the spa environment, it is very healing.

Thanks Heidi:) I was looking at their workshops catalog today. The pulse diagnosis/herbalism class sounds awesome but theres soo many more classes that are also very compelling. Do you work in a spa? How is it? Ps. I and the Trager group on this site would be very happy to hear about your T1 w/Deane. Any aha moments during or since? Brgds, Alex

Good news! Just received a weekend workshop gift certificate for Esalen from a friend!! I guess the wait is over. I will post about my experience when I go. Is there a dedicated Esalen group on here...?
