Using YouTube to Promote Your Business

You may have noticed recently that I've been adding various videos to my blog here. Why? Because one of the coolest social media and guerrilla marketing tools out there is YouTube. From uploading videos of your own business, staff or services to showing demonstrations, snippets of classes you've taught or even just sharing other people's videos, videos help get people involved in your site, blog or other social sites very effectively. They also help you to educate and connect with your… Continue

The Wounded Healer - Watch this video:-)

Throughout the years of receiving massage, bodywork, energy work, facials and other spa treatments, I have had some exceptional experiences from some truly gifted people. I've also met a number of people in the spa and healing arts industry (and the fringes) that have touted themselves as "healers" - a term and practice that immediately turns me off and makes me question their authenticity. Worse still, some of these folks wear their own pain on their sleeve making it abundantly clear to anyone… Continue

5 Ways to Make the Most of Your Current Clients

Lots of massage therapists I know talk about the need for getting new clients into their business. They feel that they just aren't seeing enough new faces in their doors or bodies on their tables. Perhaps the advertising and marketing vehicles they are using to attract new business aren't very effective. Or maybe the business' current clients aren't sending enough referrals their way. But while both of these situations are quite likely and deserve some exploration, I think it is really vital to… Continue

Making Your Massage Career Last - Part 2

In a previous post I wrote about two secrets for staying in practice for the long haul: knowing your limitations and diversifying your work. Although those are both great ideas for giving longevity to your massage career, they alone are not what has kept me working beside the table for so long. Here are a couple more ideas:

Work only with clients that you enjoy. I have the best clients in the world. They educate, energize and enthuse me in a way I would have never expected… Continue

Get It In Writing - Protect Yourself and Your Business

Today was something of a red letter day in my career. I had to go to small claims court to pursue repayment of a payroll advance and continuing education tuition from a former employee (a service provider but not a massage therapist) of my business. Despite months of trying to reach a written agreement on the actual amount due and a payment plan that was agreeable to both of us, we were unable to resolve the dispute on our own and a lawsuit had to be filed.

Although I am usually… Continue

Making Your Massage Career Last - Part I

I've been in practice since 1994, a few years longer than I originally planned. Initially I thought I would retire from doing hands-on work after about seven or eight years to focus on managing the busy (and demanding) day spa I opened in 1996. But even as my spa grew to a staff of almost fifty before I sold it four years ago, I never could make the decision to walk away from my massage practice.

Now, fifteen years after I saw my very first paying client, I am actually building my… Continue
