I invite MT's and bodyworkers to share their questions, comments and concerns about self-care, injury prevention and ergonomics on this page, my blog posts and my group, Save Your Hands!

What is ergonomics? It's literally the study of work. Ergonomics seeks to adapt work to the worker, rather than expecting the worker to adapt to his or her work. By looking at the tools, equipment you use in your work, and your work environment, ergonomics can help MT's and bodyworkers protect their own health and the health of their clients.

Self-care takes effort - but it's worth it!

An interesting subject came up in a recent interview for a Dutch massage magazine. After speaking for a while, the interviewer said to me "so it sounds like you expect therapists to rearrange their home life and work life. That sounds like a lot of effort - do you think they'll be willing to do that?" I found that to be a surprising question, but I realized that a lot of therapists probably are thinking the same thing: wow, it takes a lot of effort and thought to prevent injury.

Statistics on symptoms and injury among massage therapists and bodyworkers

In 2006, Rick Goggins and I collaborated with ABMP/Massage & Bodywork Magazine on a survey designed to produce the first reliable statistics on the prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms and disorders (injuries) among massage therapists and bodyworkers. We sent the survey by email to 1000 therapists nationwide - 601 responded. With a 60% response rate, we could consider that the results we got were representative of massage therapists and bodyworkers in general nationwide.

Effective, Holistic Injury Prevention for Massage Therapists

I'm really pleased to see that the subject of self-care and injury prevention has already been raised on this great new site. That confirms the importance of the subject to all students and professionals, particularly during these tough economic times when being able to protect your investment in your training and your career are more important than ever.

It's always gratifying to see people talking about the principles I introduced in Save Your Hands! in 1995: thinking of yourself… Continue

Hello and thank you for the warm welcome. It's been a busy few days, so I am joyful to connect with you now (though I'm having a navigation-confusion issue with this site/group.) Here is my brief intro: I live and work in Warsaw, Poland. Besides massage therapy, I offer gentle yoga classes in the Satyananda tradition. The yoga is certainly a big part of my self-care, including daily (morning) finger bending, finger-rotations, hand clenching, wrist bending, wrist rotations.... and I am always looking to find new and better ways to care for my most precious tools. Peacefully, O.

I just completed a private Deep Tissue training session and recommended your book, Save Your Hands, 2nd Edition, and Art Riggs' Deep Tissue DVD series. My student, who is a long-time practitioner, is more experienced is esthetics and Traditional Chinese Medicine than she is in Deep Tissue. The spa where she is working in the Woodlands near Houston is requiring her to offer Deep Tissue, in addition to her other modalities, so today in her training we talked about (and demonstrated) the Deep Tissue "tools of the trade." We coupled that with discussions about body mechanics and injury prevention. It was a lovely training. Your book was an inspiration! Many thanks. Would you like to exchange links on our websites? My URL is http://www.arianainstitute.com. I'd be honored to have you linked to my website. Ariana Vincent, Ariana Institute
