A Present Parent and Practitioner

On May 25th, 2007, my career as a massage professional changed more than I ever could have imagined. When my husband handed me the most beautiful baby girl I had ever seen; my priorities and focus immediately shifted to a far greater, demanding, rewarding, and amazing job.

I was able to work nearly a week past my due date. I was comfortable and had the energy and desire to continuing working. I had every intention on returning to work after my maternity leave, at least part-time.… Continue

Inheriting the Desire to Serve and Touch - Why some of us become massage professionals.

This last week my father also celebrated his 40th year in practice as a chiropractor (Forty years!). In 1969, he graduated Summa Cum Laude from Palmer College of Chiropractic and opened his practice in my small rural Iowa hometown at the ripe age of 23. At that time, the chiropractic profession was only seventy years old. The day he opened his practice, my mom saw a car pull up in his parking lot from their home down the street. Her excitement was later dampened when she found out it was… Continue

Massage Schools Behaving Badly

I’ve been a student in massage school, an administrator and instructor of a massage school, a state board member serving on the committee that approves massage schools, and a continuing ed provider that visits many schools, and I have seen more than a few things that disturb me.

I’d have to say the worst of these are schools who are so misleading to students; the owners “sell” their school to prospects by promising them they’re going to be making X amount of money the minute they… Continue

More Acupressure Points on the Feet, Spleen Meridian

My last few blogs have been describing acupressure points on the feet, and how starting with a brief foot massage can be a powerful way to help a client relax before moving into the main massage. I recommend that anyone joining our tours to China to learn acupressure, or Thailand to study Thai massage, study the points I blog about as they are major points located on the meridians. To learn more about our study abroad opportunities in Asia visit… Continue

Researching Massage Tables Just Became Easier!

FINALLY, RESEARCHING MASSAGE TABLES IS MADE EASIER!!!!

I have been asked repeatedly where the best resource could be found to compare many tables and manufacturers warranty allowances at one time, rather than have to page hop and keep tons of notes.

One AT-A-GLANCE resource for anyone who is trying to decide on which table to buy! There is now a downloadable chart created by Massage Warehouse which compares many features and benefits on many of the leading table… Continue

Acupressure Points on the Feet

In one of my last posts I talked about the benefits of the acupressure point KI 1, which is located on the bottom of the foot. In that post I mentioned it has the function of helping with insomnia, and just yesterday I was able to help someone who has difficulty sleeping. Within minutes of starting the massage at KI 1 the client was asleep, WOW, what a surprise to both of us. Even after 11 years of doing this work I am still amazed at how fast points work.

As part of a series of… Continue

Functions of Acupressure Points, Kidney 1

SInce spending a year in Thailand, and learning Thai massage, it has become more apparent to me how beneficial it can be to start a massage at the feet. This has a "grounding effect," and since so many of us live in our heads, and not our bodies; starting a massage at the feet has an almost immediate effect of calming a person.

Let's review the location and functions of one of the primary points on the feet, Kidney 1.

This point is located on the sole of the foot, between… Continue

Acupressure and Thai massage

Anyone out there practicing either acupressure or Thai massage? I have been doing acupressure and tuina for many years, but only recently started learning Thai massage. I have a lot of influence from the Chinese systems, and its interesting to compare how Thai massage works with the meridians versus the traditional Chinese styles. Overall I would have to say that the Chinese tend to emphasize massaging the symptomatic areas, whereas the Thai focus on the whole meridian system. Any ideas on when… Continue

Massage Union??

You can't have a discussion group with massage therapist without having the topic of forming a union comes up. There are many sides to this -one that probably will be never fully answered.

I for one always just think it seems like the unions are the ones who have ruined the auto industry with their demands. What would a union do for the massage profession? What really is the problem in the massage job world? I've lived a sheltered life never having to get a massage job and always… Continue

Website Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is what helps get your website to the top of the search engines. While there are many parts to getting your website found by the search engines one of the easiest things to start with is the keywords you use in your domain, webpages and metatags of your website.

An Question of Ethics.

I had occasion to ponder this some time ago and thought It might be wize to bring it up here for debate. The working asumption is that those reading this are gifted as energy/light workers but NOT trained as Social Workers or in other forms of "Talk Therapy."

Several years ago I was giving a massage to a friend of mine whom I had known for well over a decade. She was psychicaly gifted and we were very comfortable interacting on both the energetic and 3D planes. She told me she had a… Continue
