Why is Massage therapy not covered by health insurance in ALL states yet?

I was just looking for a better way to start communicating with other massage therapists on this topic... and thought about a bulletin board and remembered this forum.  I am surprised but happy to see a few people still on here posting.

Why is massage not covered by health insurance in your state yet?

With the OPIOID epidemic in the news everyday - why is massage therapy not yet the main answer to pain issues?

Don't tell me it is education or the lack of…

Getting massage covered by health insurance

Getting massage covered by health insurance is always a hot topic.  Many MT want to stay out of the healthcare business and not get into working with insurance and the medical profession claiming that it takes the 'art' out of doing massage.  The medical profession and insurance companies are seen as places that will eat massage therapists for breakfast!

On the other hand, getting massage covered by health insurance in every state can help the profession become more of a profession. …

Why we need more MT who can bill for insurance.

Massage Insurance Billing is a controversial topic. Many MT want to avoid it because of the challenges of extra paperwork and low returns.  They also are concerned that by getting involved in the medical process, they will lose their ability to help clients in the way they do now and will get mixed up in the 'fixing' mentality of insurance companies.

Being able to bill for massage is one of the big factors that has allowed me to stay in practice for so long (23 years).  I…

R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Most of the time when the media, or Hollywood, casts a light on massage, it seems to be a paraphrase of Rodney Dangerfield’s classic line, “We don’t get no respect.”

The latest hue and cry is over the upcoming new lifetime series, The Client List, in which Jennifer Love Hewitt is a massage therapist/prostitute who is of course just doing it because she needs the money to feed her kids. Last year it was that picture of a race car driver getting a massage from a skimpily dressed massage…

The Value of Massage by Andrew Wolfe,LMP

Health care is on the minds of most people, whether they have it, need it, or don't have the right policy due to financial infeasibility, to acquire or maintain it. Unfortunately when it comes to health, if you don't invest in it now, you pay for it later, as the investment of our bodies seem to yield higher rates of health issue returns to our lives as we age. As it stands now, preventative health is not recognized under most health insurance policies unless it comes… Continue

Cold and Flu season; Increase your immunity with massage by Andrew Wole,LMP

Harvest is upon us again. It is a time to gather and take in the bounty of our labors. It is also a time of reflection, a time to look within and assess our needs; to take inventory and appreciate what we have. In the medical community and with the reminders in the media, we realize it is also cold and flu season, a time when we can deplete our immune system. When this happens not just the individual suffers but all those around them do also.

As a society we have been informed of… Continue

Water-natures natural healing remedy by Andrew Wolfe,LMP

Have you ever been told by your massage therapist after receiving a massage to drink plenty of water? You may ask yourself, ''Why is this"?

The body is mostly composed of fluids. The skin holds the fluids in as well as holding other structures together - like a body suit. Fluids in the body consist of lymph, blood, cerebrospinal fluid as well as other fluids as carriers to help in the transportation, distribution and elimination process. It thereby supports the ability to heal, restore,… Continue

Clarifying massage and insurance coverage by Andrew Wolfe,LMP

It has come to my attention the need for more education about massage therapy benefits and the coverage under insurance.

First, providership is essential for the practitioner, whom is qualified by credentialing and training.

Second, is the need to look at the individual (patient’s) plan, provision and policy of the insured, whether it be an individual or group plan. Just because a provider is listed as preferred on your insurance plan does not mean you have… Continue

IMA Insurance: Up in Smoke, Therapists Burned

The saga of the now-defunct IMA (International Massage Association) continues. Back in July, Will Green, owner/founder of IMA, basically admitted to sabotaging his own company by failing to turn over $600,000

in insurance premiums paid by massage therapists to the insurance

company.

Markel, a respectable insurance company who had been underwriting IMA’s policies since Feb 1, 2008, discontinued writing policies for IMA on April 6, 2010 due to Green’s non-payment of premiums.…

Working in massage- pitfalls- please respond!

I'm looking for a forum, but in the meantime, I want to post a quickie highlighting some of my concerns about working in massage.

a) pros/cons of forming a massage therapy union which could only be run by working massage therapists. I live in Illinois, land of the corrupt, and don't think that the folks who are running our networks, schools, boards, are hands-on enough in massage to understand the potential pitfalls of this work. For instance, one of my colleagues has told me stories… Continue
